Usually when one of the boys get hurt, I kiss the boo-boo, give them a hug and send them on their way. But this time, Drew wasn't having it. He walked around that evening and the next few days with his leg straight. Jeff noticed that his knee was swollen. A week after the initial incident, he's right back outside playing tackle football again despite the swelling...and he hurts his knee again. So off to the doctor we went the next morning.
Our regular pediatrician was out of the office so we saw someone else. Dr. R sent us over to see a pediatric orthopedic doctor that afternoon. Drew was super awesome during his visit. He had a few x-rays taken. We have a paper copy and Drew loves that! The doctor poked his knee and turned it every which way.
Basically, it's just a sprain. There are no broken bones and very little fluid. Drew is sporting a neoprene brace which is actually for an adult's elbow.
We go back to see the ortho doctor next Friday. If there's still swelling then Drew will be scheduled for an MRI for which he has to be sedated. I pray this won't be necessary. Drew has been sedated once before for hand surgery. When I was taken back to the recovery room, the doctors and nurses were having a very hard time waking my baby up. NOT something a parent wants to see. Then Drew developed pneumonia from the anesthesia. NO ONE told us this was a possibility.
It's been really tough for Drew to take it easy with his knee. He's not a kid that likes to sit still for long. Pray for the swelling to subside by next Friday!
